Crown Trade Full Gloss is a solvent based gloss paint suitable for interior and exterior use. It can be applied to a wide variety of substrates, such as wood, metal and PVCu and it can offer long lasting and resilient protection.
To obtain flawless results, the surfaces to be painted are required to be structurally sound, clean, dry and free from dirt, dust or any other surface contaminants.
- Remove all paint that is old, flaking and is substandard either by sanding or with the use of a paint scraper
- Extra care needs to be taken during the surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces as they could possibly contain harmful levels of lead
- If it is required, wash the surface to remove any dirt, grease and dusty or remnants of powdery residues
- To remove any organic growth including mould, fungal, algal or lichen growths, then treat the area with fungicidal solution, such as Sandtex Fungicidal Wash
- Cleanse with clean water and leave to dry
- Any defects in the surface, such as cracks and small holes, need to be be repaired, plugged and sealed with an appropriate filler and then sanded smooth
- If necessary, rub down surfaces and then wipe off with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove any remnants of dust
- It is advisable to use a primer, for instance Crown Trade Full Undercoat to help the paint cling firmly to the surface
If being applied to a wooden surface, then the additional steps need to be applied:
- Wooden products that have oils/extractives require cleaning with methylated spirits, frequently changing the face of the cloth, and treat any knots with two coats of fresh knotting
- New wooden surfaces will need to be lightly sanded to provide a key for a suitable undercoat to adhere to
- Any bare wood will need to be primed with a suitable wood primer followed by an undercoat before the application to ensure a strong bind to the surface
If being applied to a metal surface, then the following additional steps need to be applied:
- If being applied to new metal, excluding galvanised surfaces, then lightly abrade the surface, rinse clean followed by a coating of a metal primer and than a coating of Crown Trade Full Undercoat
- On new bright galvanised surfaces, degrease the surface thoroughly and then pre-treat with a T wash solution, followed by applying a suitable metal primer followed by an appropriate undercoat
- Non ferrous metals require a coat of a suitable metal primer followed by an undercoat to help Crown Trade Full Gloss adhere to the surface
- Ferrous metals need to be stripped back to their original state with the removal of all surface rust and millscale, then apply a single coat of a suitable metal primer followed by a coating of undercoat within the same working day
- If the metal surface has been previously decorated, ensure any rust is removed, the edges of the paint are feathered, and the area washed clean and finally wet abrade the surface, rinse and allow to dry. Then apply one coat of a metal primer followed by a single coat of undercoat to aid with adhesion
Always produce a test area before the application to evaluate product suitability and the final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.
To achieve consistency of colour, purchase enough paint for each project including a sufficient amount for touch-in at a later time.
If it is likely for the air or substrate temperature to fall below 8°C or when the relative humidity is above 80% during application or the drying period, then do not apply Crown Trade Full Gloss
- Mix and stir the paint, taking care to work through the bottom and edges of the tin to ensure an even distribution of the pigment within the paint
- Apply Crown Trade Full Gloss with a good quality synthetic brush or microfibre roller
- The "wet edge" technique is advised during the application to help maintain consistent results
- The normal finishing procedure is 2 full coats of Crown Trade Full Gloss, though this is variable if applied over a dark surface
Cleaning
Painted surfaces can be washed with water and a liquid detergent or wiped with a damp cloth to eliminate surface scuffs and blemishes.
Maintenance
To preserve the finish, simply apply a fresh coat of Crown Trade Full Gloss as required, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.
