Crown Trade Full Undercoat is the ideal foundation for gloss coatings and offers excellent adhesion and opacity. It is suitable for internal and external use on joinery and primed metal.
To achieve the best results it is important to guarantee the area is structurally sound, clean and dry, being free of any flaws or imperfections
- Clean off any flawed, peeling and defective paint either by sanding or with the use of a paint scraper
- Extra care should be taken during the surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces as they may contain detrimental levels of lead
- Eliminate all organic growth, such as mould, algal lichen or fungal growths, with an antifungal mixture, such as Sandtex Fungicidal Wash
- All oil, dirt, grease and dusty or powdery residues are required to be removed by washing the area with an appropriate detergent
- Any imperfections, such as cracks and small holes or cavities, need to be be filled and fixed with a suitable filler and then sanded smooth
- Clean any residue of dust or fragments of debris with washing and cleaning the project area by using a suitable detergent, then rinse with clean water and allow to fully dry
If being applied to a wooden surface, then the additional steps need to be applied:
- Wooden products that have oils/extractives require cleaning with methylated spirits, frequently changing the face of the cloth, and treat any knots with two coats of fresh knotting
- New or grey and denatured surfaces will need to be lightly sanded to provide a key for Crown Trade Full Undercoat to grip to and provide strong adhesion
- Any bare wood will need to be primed with a suitable wood primer before the application to ensure a strong bind to the surface
If being applied to a metal surface, then the following additional steps need to be applied:
- If being applied to new metal, excluding galvanised surfaces, then lightly abrade the surface, rinse clean followed by a coating of a metal primer
- On new bright galvanised surfaces, degrease the surface thoroughly and then pre-treat with a T wash solution, followed by applying a suitable metal primer
- Non ferrous metals require a coat of a suitable metal primer to help Crown Trade Full Undercoat adhere to the surface
- Ferrous metals need to be stripped back to their original state with the removal of all surface rust and millscale, then apply a single coat of a suitable metal primer within the same working day
- If the metal surface has been previously decorated, ensure any rust is removed, the edges of the paint are feathered, and the area washed clean and finally wet abrade the surface, rinse and allow to dry
Always make a test area before the application to judge the suitability of the product. Follow the manufacturer's instructions at all times.
To guarantee the consistency of coverage throughout the application, ensure enough Crown Trade Full Undercoat is supplied for the project area
Do not apply if the air or surface temperatures are likely to be below 8°C or to exceed 80% humidity
- Blend and stir the paint, ensuring to work through the edges and bottom of the tin to provide an even dispersal of the pigment within the paint
- Application can be performed with either a high quality short or medium pile roller or a good quality synthetic or bristle brush
- If Crown Trade Full Undercoat is being applied by spray, then refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the recommended dilution ratio
- The normal finishing process requires only 1 full coat of Crown Trade Full Undercoat
Please note: A characteristic of this product is that whiteness intensifies as the paint dries.
