Overview
Dulux Trade Undercoat is a solvent-based undercoat for interior wood and metal aiding adhesion and preparing a smooth and even finish for a wide variety of topcoats. It can be used with a wide variety of topcoats where previous coatings might cause issues with depth of colour, flatness and longevity. It also ensures a true colour can be achieved in fewer coats.
Generally, this product is used in conjunction with Dulux Trade High Gloss, but can also be used with Dulux Trade Satinwood and Dulux Trade Eggshell if required.
Preparation
Preparation
To ensure the best results from Dulux Trade Undercoat, ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free of dirt, dust and other surface contaminants.
- Remove any mould or organic growth from exterior surfaces with Dulux Trade Weathershield Multi-Surface Fungicidal Wash?
- Any surface defects should be filled with an appropriate filler
- Treat knotty or resinous timber with an appropriate knotting solution
- Thoroughly rub down previously painted surfaces then wipe off with a damp, lint-free cloth or vacuum all traces of sanding dust. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead

Application
Always try a test area before starting any project to assess the suitability of the finish. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin.
Please note: this product is not suitable for spray application.
- Stir the tin thoroughly before and periodically during use, making sure to include pigment gathered in the top and bottom creases of the tin
- Apply 1 coat of the appropriately coloured undercoat using a synthetic bristle brush or microfibre roller
- Allow to dry for 16 hours
- Most projects will only need 1 coat of your chosen topcoat but some projects, especially those with a stronger change of colour might require 2 coats
Finishing
Finishing
Once dry, Dulux Trade Undercoat can be finished with almost any interior or exterior grade finishing products. It's normally used in conjunction with Dulux Trade High Gloss, but can be used with almost any finish where strong obliteration of a previous finish or building up a sheen level is required.
