- ?A solvent-based undercoat for exterior wood and wood trim
- Up to 8 years weather protection
- Increases opacity and sheen
Dulux Trade Weathershield Exterior Flexible Undercoat. An essential component of the Dulux Trade solvent-based Weathershield system. It prepares surfaces by filling imperfections and ensuring smoothness, while promoting strong adhesion between the surface and the final coat. It enhances colour intensity, improves overall coverage, and contributes to the paint's longevity by providing added protection against environmental elements. With sealing properties to prevent excessive absorption and a role in achieving a smoother finish, undercoats are a cost-effective investment that lays the groundwork for a long lasting, durable and polished paint job.
Dulux Trade state that the offered 8 years weather protection is only valid when all three components are used in conjunction with each other, according to the correct preparation and application steps.
- Prefer a water-based, quick drying system instead? Use Dulux Trade Weathershield Quick Dry Exterior Flexible Undercoat followed by Dulux Trade Weathershield Quick Dry Exterior Paint
To ensure the best results, ensure surfaces are sound, clean, dry and free of dirt, dust and other surface contaminants.
- Bare wood surfaces should be primed with 2 coats of Dulux Trade Weathershield Preservative Primer, following the relevant instructions
- New joinery is often factory primed using a stain basecoat (often called a dual-purpose primer). These materials quickly erode when left exposed and may need to be re-primed
- Remove all loose and defective coatings. If coatings are removed back to bare wood, these surfaces will need priming, as above
- Treat any areas of active mould or lichen with Dulux Trade Weathershield Multi-Surface Fungicidal Wash
- Thoroughly rub down all previous coatings to provide a key and remove all traces of sanding dust with a lightly dampened microfibre cloth. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
- Any surface defects should be filled with an appropriate filler
Always do a test area before starting any project to test for compatibility and adhesion. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin.
Please note: Dulux Trade Weathershield Exterior Flexible Undercoat is designed for brush application only and should not be sprayed.
- Stir the tin thoroughly before and periodically during use, making sure to include pigment gathered in the top and bottom creases of the tin
- Apply 2 coats of the appropriately coloured undercoat
- Allow 6-8 hours to dry before overcoating for the white and dark grey colour options, allow 16-24 for all other colour options
- Follow on with a suitable Dulux Trade Weathershield topcoat
Once Dulux Trade Weathershield Exterior Flexible Undercoat is dry, follow on with a suitable topcoat, such as Dulux Trade Weathershield Exterior High Gloss.
