Dulux Trade Weathershield Quick Dry Exterior Preservative Primer is a water-based preservative primer basecoat. It penetrates deep into new wood, sealing and protecting from water-damage, decay and blue-staining fungi. It has great flexibility to help absorb the natural movement of wood.
Please note: any offered "all weather protection" is only when all three components of a compatible Dulux Trade Weathershield system are used in conjunction with each other. In order to get the full protection, use with an undercoat and topcoat. See below for details.
To ensure the best results from Dulux Trade Weathershield Quick Dry Exterior Preservative Primer, ensure surfaces are sound, clean, dry and free of dirt, dust and other surface contaminants.
- Remove all loose and defective coatings. Stripping back to bare wood where necessary. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
- New joinery is often factory primed using a staining basecoat (often called a dual-purpose primer). These materials often erode quickly when left exposed and will require re-priming, where necessary
- Remove any existing mould and lichen with a suitable fungicidal cleaner, such as Dulux Trade Weathershield Multi-Surface Fungicidal Wash
- Replace any rotten wood and troublesome knots with new timber
- Apply a knotting solution to treat any remaining knots
- Rub down any grey, weathered wood
- Any surface defects should be filled with an appropriate filler
Always do a test area before starting any project to test for compatibility and adhesion. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.
- Mix contents of the tin by shaking vigourously
- Pour out a sufficient amount into a suitable container, do not use directly from the can nor return any unused primer back into the container
- Thinning is not necessary and should be avoided
- Apply 2 coats of Dulux Trade Weathershield Preservative Primer, applying second coat as soon as the first has soaked in, this typically takes between 2-6 hours
- Do not allow the first coat to fully dry before applying the second coat as this reduces penetration and prolongs total drying time
- Allow 16 hours after the second coat to fully dry
- Remove excess primer from surrounding paintwork
- Follow on with an appropriate Weathershield paint system
In order to get the full protection from Dulux Trade Weathershield Preservative Primer it's designed to be used as part 1 of a 3 part system. It should be used in conjunction with a suitable undercoat and topcoat:
