Osmo UV Protection Oil is designed for smooth planed or sanded wood such as joinery, vertical cladding or furniture. Using this product on rough sawn or featherboard wood will significantly reduce it's stated coverage. It is not recommend for use on for use on flat, horizontal surfaces where water can collect such as exterior floors, decking, wooden steps or flat window sills.

Colour Tips

Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra (Natural 429) has been specifically designed to retain the natural, untreated appearance of lighter timbers such as Oak, Pine and Larch. It is not suitable for dark exotic hardwoods, as it may leave a 'milky' or 'white film' appearance to the wood.

The clear version of this product can be used as a top coat for Osmo exterior coloured finishes, such as Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain and Osmo Country Colour. For a biocide-free alternative we recommend Osmo UV Protection Oil (410).

Preparation
Preparation

Ensure that all wood to be treated with Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra is clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 20%).

New Wood

  1. Surfaces should be sanded with a 120 grit abrasive and no finer
  2. New wood and especially hardwoods should be allowed to weather for approximately 6 weeks prior to oiling
  3. De-grease surfaces with methylated spirit or Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner (8000) before oiling
  4. Fill any holes or gaps with a suitable exterior wood filler
  5. Treat the wood with Osmo WR Base Coat (4001) if desired

Please Note: Allowing the wood to weather, especially dense exotic hardwoods, enables the tight, dense grain of the timber to open up. This makes it easier for the oil to penetrate deeper in to the wood grain.

Old Wood

  1. Clean old microporous finishes (wood oils) thoroughly
  2. Areas affected by mould, algae and moss must be cleaned and treated
  3. Old paints, lacquers and varnish like stains must be completely removed
  4. The colour of timber that has turned grey / silver over time can be restored prior to oiling with Osmo Wood Reviver Gel (6609)
  5. Then treat as New Wood

  2. Where possible treat all sides of the timber including edges and ends prior to installation
  3. Thinly apply UV protection oil following the grain of the wood
  4. Allow to "soak in", then wipe off excess with a clean, lint-free cloth
