Crown Trade Covermatt Obliterating Emulsion fits the early stages of a decorating project, before a more durable decorative finish is needed. It provides an initial coating for new work rather than a general-purpose option for repainting existing finishes. Choose the eventual topcoat according to how the room will be used and how frequently its walls will need cleaning.
Suitability
Suitable for new interior plaster and dry-lined walls and ceilings, following the appropriate preparation. Previously painted surfaces should only be recoated with this product where the existing finish is sound Covermatt Obliterating Emulsion. For areas requiring regular washing or scrubbing, choose a suitable durable finish instead.

New plaster and dry-lined walls and ceilings must be sound, clean, suitably dry and free from anything that could affect adhesion. Avoid breathing preparation dust and wear suitable respiratory protection.
- Remove dust, loose material and any surface contamination.
- Fill surface defects with a suitable filler, following the manufacturer's instructions. Sand smooth where necessary and remove all sanding dust.
- Prime powdery surfaces with one coat of Sandtex Trade Quick Drying Stabilising Solution, following its instructions.
- Polished or dense surfaces should be primed with an appropriate primer, checking compatibility with the surface and finishing paint before use.
- For porous surfaces, prepare a mist coat of Crown Trade Covermatt Obliterating Emulsion by adding 40% clean water by volume: 400ml of water per litre of paint.
Always produce a test area beforehand to assess product suitability and the final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.
Do not apply if air or surface temperatures are likely to fall below 8°C, or relative humidity exceeds 80%, during application or drying. Provide adequate ventilation.
- Stir well before and during use. Intermix packs for colour consistency and check the colour is correct before application.
- Using a good quality synthetic brush, cut in around ceiling edges, corners, switches and other fittings.
- Roll the adjoining area while the cut-in edges are still wet, using a medium pile roller. Apply two finishing coats as required, repeating the cutting in for each coat.
- For airless spraying, dilution may be required. Follow the spray equipment manufacturer's guidelines for further information.
- Allow at least 4 hours between coats under normal drying conditions. Additional coats may be needed for complete coverage.
Wash tools with water or warm soapy water immediately after use, then rinse. Do not pour paint into drains or watercourses.
Cleaning
If cleaning is necessary, wipe gently with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid vigorous rubbing or scrubbing, as this can leave shiny patches or remove the coating.
Maintenance
Crown Trade Covermatt Obliterating Emulsion is intended for first decoration before overcoating with a more durable paint. When redecorating, follow the selected finish's preparation and application instructions.
