For the best results, surfaces must be properly prepared before applying Tom's Oil Eggshell. Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from contamination to achieve a durable and professional finish.
- Do not use this product on decking or any horizontal surfaces subject to standing water or heavy wear.
- Check that the moisture content of the wood is below 15%. Damp or rotting timber should not be painted, as this will lead to failure such as flaking or blistering.
- Special care should be taken when preparing surfaces painted before 1960, as these may contain harmful lead. Seek professional advice if in doubt.
- Strip away all defective, peeling, or loose paint with a scraper, by sanding, or with a suitable paint and varnish remover
- On metal surfaces, remove all traces of rust and apply a suitable metal primer before painting.
- Remove any existing coatings of wax, woodstain, or varnish completely. Previously painted surfaces should be cleaned with sugar soap or detergent, then abraded with medium-grade sandpaper to provide a key.
- Ensure surfaces are free from dust, grease, and debris. Wipe down with a clean, lint-free cloth before painting.
- For bare, new wood, apply two coats of a Wood Primer to aid the adhesion of Tom's Oil Eggshell.
Always test a small area before starting your project to confirm product suitability, colour, and finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.
Apply only when the air and surface temperature is above 10°C and at least 3°C above the dew point. Avoid application in very hot conditions (above 25°C) or if rain or frost is forecast during drying.
- Stir thoroughly before and during use to ensure an even consistency.
- Apply using a high-quality natural bristle brush or a short nap mohair roller. For larger projects, spray application is possible when thinned in accordance with the product guidance.
- Apply in smooth, even strokes and avoid over-brushing to achieve the best flow and finish.
- For bare timber previously primed with a Wood Primer, apply two full coats of Tom's Oil Eggshell.
- On suitably primed metal, apply two coats for full protection and durability.
- Allow a minimum of 16 hours between coats, longer in cool or damp conditions. Surface will be touch dry after 2-3 hours.
- The final sheen may take up to seven days to fully develop depending on film thickness and drying conditions.
With the right care and maintenance, Tom's Oil Eggshell will provide long-lasting protection and a beautiful finish for exterior wood and metal surfaces.
- For light cleaning, use a dilute solution of lukewarm water and a mild detergent. Wipe with a soft sponge or lint-free cloth and allow to air dry.
- Avoid harsh abrasives or aggressive cleaners, which may damage the finish.
- Prevent build-up of dirt and dust by keeping surrounding areas well maintained. Regular dusting with a soft cloth or damp-dusting method is recommended.
- Avoid placing heavy objects or fittings against freshly painted surfaces for at least one week, as the finish needs time to fully harden.
- For additional protection on frequently used items such as doors or shelves, a very light application of a suitable wax polish may help reduce marking over time.
- For repairs, lightly abrade the affected area, prime any exposed substrate, and repaint "break to break" with one or two coats as required. Spot repairs alone may cause slight colour variation.
