Proper preparation is essential to achieve the best results with Traditional Oil Gloss. Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, sound, and free from dust, grease, and contaminants before painting.
- Check timber moisture content is below 15%. Damp or green oak should not be painted. Green oak must be weathered for at least 6 months before coating.
- Special care should be taken when preparing surfaces painted before 1960, as these may contain harmful lead. Such coatings should be stripped with caution and in accordance with safety guidance-seek professional advice if in doubt.
- Repair any surface imperfections and fill defects to create a smooth, even base before application.
- Seal knots in softwood with a knotting solutioncompound to prevent staining, then apply a suitale primer. For resinous hardwoods, it could be necessary to apply 2 coats of Wood Primer.
- For metal surfaces, remove rust and surface contamination by hand or mechanical cleaning. Bare or corroded iron and steel should be treated with two coats of a suitable primer
- Previously painted surfaces should be cleaned with sugar soap or detergent and abraded with medium-grade sandpaper to provide a key. Apply a coat of Little Greene ASP to promote adhesion.
- Plastic surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned and abraded to provide a key, then primed for best results.
Always test a small area before beginning your project to confirm product suitability, colour, and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.
Apply only when ambient and surface temperatures are above 8°C. Avoid painting if rain or frost is expected, or in hot conditions above 25°C. Ensure good ventilation during application and drying.
- Stir thoroughly before and during use to maintain a consistent finish.
- Apply with a high-quality natural bristle brush for the best flow and gloss. A foam roller can be used for smooth, flat surfaces, while spray application is also possible when thinned as directed.
- Work in even strokes, maintaining a wet edge to avoid lap marks. Do not go back over areas that have started to dry.
- Apply two full coats for optimum durability and gloss, lightly rubbing down between coats to remove dust and improve adhesion.
- Allow at least 16 hours between coats; surfaces will be touch dry in approximately 4 hours.
- Final sheen may take several days to fully develop, depending on film thickness and drying conditions.
With the right care, Traditional Oil Gloss will maintain its durable, reflective finish for many years. Regular cleaning and sensible maintenance will help preserve both appearance and performance.
- For light surface soiling, clean with a dilute solution of lukewarm water and mild detergent using a soft sponge or lint-free cloth. Rinse and allow to air dry.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh scrubbing pads, which may damage the glossy surface.
- Maintain good ventilation indoors to help reduce the build-up of dust, grease, and household contaminants on painted surfaces.
- General dusting can be carried out with a soft cloth or by damp-dusting. Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment for adjacent areas.
- Avoid placing heavy objects or fittings against freshly painted surfaces for at least one week, as the gloss requires time to fully harden.
- Frequently used surfaces, such as doors or shelving, may benefit from a very light application of suitable wax polish to help reduce marking over the long term.
- For repairs, lightly abrade the affected area, prime any exposed substrate, and repaint break-to-break with one or two full coats. Spot repairs alone may leave visible differences in sheen or colour.
