Preparation
Preparation

Check that all substrates are dry, stable and free from contaminants such as dust, grease or loose particles.

  1. Remove any loose or flaking paint and lightly sand to create a smooth surface. Take care when preparing older surfaces, as they may contain lead-based paint.
  2. Repair cracks or holes with a suitable filler, allow to dry, then sand smooth. Where filler porosity differs from the surrounding surface, spot-prime to ensure even absorption.
  3. Clean the area with a dilute Sugar Soap solution and rinse with clean water. Avoid solvent-based or strong alkaline cleaners, as these can affect adhesion.
  4. New or unpainted plaster: Ensure plaster is fully dry (as a guide, 7 days per 5 mm thickness). Apply a mist coat by diluting Estate Emulsion with approximately 25% clean water, followed by two full coats of undiluted paint.
  5. Previously painted surfaces: Lightly abrade sound coatings and remove dust. Apply one coat of the recommended Farrow & Ball Wall & Ceiling Primer & Undercoat in the correct tone for your topcoat, then follow with two full coats of Estate Emulsion.
  6. Lining paper: Prime with a light coat of the recommended primer and undercoat (diluted up to 10% with water if required), then apply two full coats of your chosen colour. Test on a small area first, as dilution may vary depending on paper porosity.
Application
Application

Always make a test area before application to ensure the product's suitability, following the manufacturer's instructions at all times. Stir thoroughly before and during use, and for best results apply Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion in dry conditions with good ventilation.

Do not apply in temperatures below 10°C or above 30°C, or in high humidity.

  1. Use a high-quality synthetic brush or medium pile Paint Roller for a smooth, even finish. For larger projects, spraying may also be suitable.
  2. Maintain a wet edge at all times to prevent overlapping marks or "picture framing" on this very matt finish.
  3. Work methodically across each wall from top to bottom, maintaining a wet edge and blending sections together for an even appearance.
  4. Apply two full coats of Estate Emulsion, allowing at least 2 hours drying time between coats. Some deeper shades or significant colour changes may require additional coats.
  5. When rolling, work in small sections and finish each coat by lightly laying off in one direction to reduce roller patterning and achieve a consistent appearance.
  6. Clean brushes and rollers immediately after use with warm soapy water. Avoid letting paint dry on tools.
