Preparation

For best results, ensure all surfaces are sound, clean, dry, and free from grease, dust, or flaking material before you begin painting.

Carefully strip away any peeling, blistered, or damaged paint layers using a scraper, sander, or an appropriate paint remover
Be cautious when sanding or stripping older paint surfaces (pre-1960s), as these may contain traces of lead
Fill cracks, holes, or imperfections with a suitable filler and sand back to achieve a smooth, even finish
Seal knots in softwood with knotting solution and clean any resinous hardwoods
Allow fresh plaster to dry completely before applying a thinned first coat as a primer
